Hypertension or high blood pressure happens when the force of blood against the artery walls is too strong. It is also labeled a “silent killer” because it does not cause symptoms unless it is severe and causes major organ damage if not treated.
The exact cause of high blood pressure cannot be pinpointed. But several factors are known to increase blood pressure, including obesity, heavy alcohol use, and family history of high blood pressure, high salt intake, and aging. A sedentary lifestyle, stress, low potassium intake, low calcium intake, and resistance to insulin may also cause your blood pressure to rise.
Most of cases are defected during a routine visit to the doctor’s. Blood pressure must reach or exceed 140/90 mm Hg on three or more separate occasions before a diagnosis is confirmed.
